It has been widely recognized that learning levels of children studying in Govt schools are low and need urgent intervention.
ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) survey conducted by Pratham network has highlighting this issue since 2005. For example ASER 2007 estimates that overall in the country only 21.6% children in Standard-3 can read text from Standard-2. Close to 41% children cannot read Standard-2 text even in Standard-5.
In Karnataka, this situation is even worse. Here, the number of children who can read Standard-2 text is 15.4% for Standard-3 children and 44% for Standard-5 children. So overall situation is alarming. These are the children who will eventually drop out of school and get added to the pool of illiterates.
