Nearly half of India is illiterate. The recent economic expansion will not be widespread without significantly higher percentage of Indians being able to read and write. The positive impact of education on a person and nation’s well being are clearly established. Pragathi will focus on basic and functional literacy especially in the rural areas and among segments of the society suffering from gender and caste biases.
Women’s empowerment
Women are deprived of basic rights such as education, nutrition and health care. This is evident from the gaps in literacy between and men and women and gaps in number of men and women in India. In addition to being a fundamental right, women’s empowerment reduces various forms of anti-female bias and increases women’s social standing.
Standard of living
A large section of the population lives under $1 a day. Livelihood generation programs and functional literacy are two approaches that can improve the standards of living and promote self-reliance.
